  • Objectives: After completing the course, students should be able to:

    • In detail describe the technical concept of cogeneration of multiple energy services with flexible fuel input, specifically with regards to

      • Efficiency as compared to stand-alone production

      • Economical as well as environmental performance.

    • Describe available technologies and engineering tools applicable in small-scale cogeneration and trigeneration systems

    • Describe and carry out engineering design of functional control strategies for integrated cogeneration and trigeneration systems.

  • Contents: Introduction to Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics, Introduction to Combined Heating and Power (CHP) [Cogeneration] Systems and Combined Cooling, Heating, and Power (CCHP) [Trigeneration] Systems, Prime Mover Technologies and Generators, Other Components (Compressors, Chillers, Heat Exchangers, Boilers), Design Principles, Renewable Applications: Biogas, Sewage, and Landfill, Local Regulatory Issues and Incentives, Feasibility Calculations, Environmental Impacts, Case Studies, Simulation Tools, and Final Project.
